چکیده

This is a landmark book. For anyone interested in language, in dictionaries and thesauri, or natural language processing, the introduction, Chapters 14, and Chapter 16 are must reading. (Select other chapters according to your special interests; see the chapter-by-chapter review). These chapters provide a thorough introduction to the preeminent electronic lexical database of today in terms of accessibility and usage in a wide range of applications. But what does that have to do with digital libraries? Natural language processing is essential for dealing efficiently with the large quantities of text now available online: fact extraction and summarization, automated indexing and text categorization, and machine translation. Another essential function is helping the user with query formulation through synonym relationships between words and hierarchical and other relationships between concepts. WordNet supports both of these functions and thus deserves careful study by the digital library community.

Book Reviews: WordNet: An Electronic Lexical Database

WordNet is perhaps the most important and widely used lexical resource for natural language processing systems up to now. WordNet: An Electronic Lexical Database, edited by Christiane Fellbaum, discusses the design of WordNet from both theoretical and historical perspectives, provides an up-to-date description of the lexical database, and presents a set of applications of WordNet. The book cont...

Introduction to WordNet: An On-line Lexical Database

Standard alphabetical procedures for organizing lexical information put together words that are spelled alike and scatter words with similar or related meanings haphazardly through the list. Unfortunately, there is no obvious alternative, no other simple way for lexicographers to keep track of what has been done or for readers to find the word they are looking for. But a frequent objection to t...

Connecting the Universal to the Specific: Towards the Global Grid

Despite their widespread use in Natural Language Processing applications, lexical databases and wordnets in particular do not yet contribute satisfactorily to the difficult problem of automatic word sense discrimination. Having built a number of lexical databases ourselves, we are keenly aware of still unresolved fundamental theoretical issues. In this paper we examine some of these questions a...

Publishing and Linking WordNet using lemon and RDF

In this paper we provide a description of a dataset consisting of data from the Princeton WordNet. This version is intended to provide canonical URIs that can be used by a wide variety of lexical resources to express their linking as part of the Linguistic Linked Open Data Cloud. Furthermore, this is the first version to use the lemon model and we describe how we represent WordNet with this model.

Collecting Semantic Similarity Ratings to Connect Concepts in Assistive Communication Tools

To compensate for the common inability of people with lexical production impairments to access and express intended concepts, we make use of models of human semantic memory that build on the notion of semantic similarity and relatedness. Such models, constructed on evidence gained from psycholinguistic experiments, form the basis of a large lexical database, WORDNET. We augment WORDNET with man...
